About Dr Tony Hughes  
 
Dr Tony Hughes qualified in Birmingham in 1976 MBChB . He is an independent sector GP based principally at The Princess Grace Hospital in Central London. He has recently originated and acted as associate producer for the Emmy award winning BBC2 programmes ‘Stephen Fry- the Secret Life of the Manic Depressive’ and co- authored a book entitled: ‘You don’t have to be Famous to have Manic Depression’, released by Penguin. It also gives advice on general mental health issues.

He spent two years in Australia during which time he was senior house officer in psychiatry at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. Whilst in Perth he joined a part of the Perth National Theatre as an actor for six months. Returning to England he completed General practice training for the JCPGT certificate, spending a year in Wimbledon in General Practice and a senior house officer post in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Westminster Hospital. He then became the resident medical officer at the Cromwell Hospital for a year thence starting in private general practice in 1984. He is a council member and the editor of the newsletter for the Independent Doctors Forum, a body promoting independent healthcare and postgraduate training.

He has continued his interests in the arts world acting in fringe theatre, paints in oil and is a member of the London Sketch club. A course in film production was intended to lead to a short film but concluded in the documentary for television, thus combining work in the world of science and the arts
